박신영 Shin-young Park 



박신영(1987, 대한민국)은 서울대학교에서 서양화 학사와 석사 학위를, 영국왕립예술대학에서 판화 석사 학위를 받았고 해외에서 다수의 단체전과 레지던시에 참여하였다. 그는 여행과 이동, 거주의 과정에서 접한 각 지역의 문화적, 사회적 특성을 흡수하고 그것이 일으키는 다양한 감각, 정서 및 상상을 물질로 시각화한다. 낯선 환경 속 상이한 문화적 차이들을 반영한 그의 작업은 드로잉, 판화 및 설치작업으로 전개되어 관객에게 이질적인 문화적 환경을 조우하는 경험을 선사한다.

Shin-Young Park (b. 1987, South Korea) received her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Western Painting from Seoul National University and a Master’s degree in Printmaking from the Royal College of Art in the UK. She has participated in numerous group exhibitions and residencies abroad. Park absorbs the cultural and social characteristics of each region she encounters during her travels, relocations, and stays, and she visualizes the various sensations, emotions, and imaginations these experiences evoke into tangible forms. Her works, reflecting the cultural differences within unfamiliar environments, unfold through drawing, printmaking, and installation, providing audiences with an experience of encountering disparate cultural settings.
 

박신영은 다양한 작업 전개 방식을 통해 작품 활동을 전개하고 있다. 작가 스스로가 한국과 영국, 캐나다, 스페인, 폴란드 그리고 모로코 등 세계 곳곳을 돌아다니며 경험한 노마드적인 삶의 방식을 작품들에서 느낄 수 있게 하며, 이는 감상자로 하여금 예술을 다채롭게 마주할 수 있는 가능성을 제시한다. 특히 일반적인 재료인 잉크나 수채물감 외에도 와인 등의 독특한 매체를 사용하고 있는 그의 이질적인 작업 방식은 마치 전혀 다른 작가들의 작품을 동시에 보여주는 듯한 느낌을 자아내며, 그가 타국에서 느꼈던 낯선 감정들, 그리고 그 장소의 타인들이 보냈었던 ‘낯선 이를 경계하는 시선’을 간접적으로나마 느낄 수 있도록 작동한다. 그의 화면상에는 타지에서 느끼는 낯섬과 외로움이 극대화되고 있으며, 강렬한 색채의 대립과 매체 사이의 생경한 표현 또한 동시에 나타난다.¹  이를 통해 친숙한 이미지들 사이에 낯선 느낌의 존재감이 부상하고, 감상자로 하여금 ‘친숙함’과 ‘낯섦’의 대비를 경험하게 하여 작품 감상의 한 가운데에서 자신의 정체성이 왜곡됨을 경험하도록 한 뒤 이윽고 스스로의 정체성의 탐구라는 질문에 다다를 수 있도록 유도한다.

작품의 화면 자체에서는 작가의 자아가 작품에 직접적으로 드러나지는 않는다고 볼 수 있다. 그러나 그가 자신의 생애를 거쳐 느껴왔던 ‘낯선 환경’에 대한 무의식적인 감정들과 ‘낯선 이’, 즉 ‘외부인’으로서 자신이 받아왔던 시선의 경험들은 서로 뒤섞여 화면에서 표출되며, 객관적인 묘사라기보다는 이질적이고 기묘한 화면으로 구축된다. 때문에 그의 작품들에서는 마치 꿈속에서 본 것과 같은 이미지들이 나타나며 의미를 쉬이 알 수 없는 여러 도상들이 동시에 등장하기도 한다. 이번 전시 출품작인 <From Sunset to Dawn>이나 <Faces in the Water>를 보면 앞서 말한 것들이 더 잘 느껴진다. 밝고 어두운 색채들이 강렬하게 나타나고, 마치 정글 한 가운데 있는 것 같은 해당 이미지들은 가히 꿈 속에서나 볼 수 있는 장소라고 할 수 있다. 이러한 이질적이고 한편으로는 이국적인 풍경들의 반복 속에서 우리는 어떤 불안 내지 혼란을 느낄 수 있고, 노마드적 삶의 궤적을 그려가며 정체성에 대해 고민하던 작가의 감정을 정면으로 마주할 수 있다.

이 시대의 우리는 ‘노마디스트(Nomadist)’로 살아가며 물리적 혹은 정신적인 유랑을 경험하고, 그 과정에서 자신의 정체성에 대해 해답을 얻고자 한다. 박신영 작가 또한 그러한 유랑을 우리와 동시대에 함께 하고 있는 하나의 개인이며, 그의 작업물을 통해 우리는 그가 유랑을 통해 얻어낸 고뇌의 결과를 일부분 엿볼 수 있을 것이다. 그 경험을 통해 우리의 앞에 놓인 삶의 경로에서 자신을 진지하게 마주하는 계기가 되길 바라며, 어디로 방향을 놓고 발걸음을 내딛어야 할 지 고민하게 되는 시작점이 되길 바란다.

Shin-Young Park employs a variety of artistic approaches in her work. Her nomadic lifestyle, traveling and living in places such as South Korea, the UK, Canada, Spain, Poland, and Morocco, is evident in her art, offering viewers the possibility of encountering art in diverse ways. Particularly, her unconventional use of materials, like wine in addition to traditional ink and watercolor, creates a sense of encountering the works of entirely different artists simultaneously. This allows viewers to indirectly experience the unfamiliar emotions she felt in foreign lands and the cautious gazes she received as a stranger. Her works amplify feelings of strangeness and loneliness in foreign environments, and her use of stark color contrasts and unfamiliar expressions between media further enhances this effect.[1] This contrast between familiar images and a sense of unfamiliarity encourages viewers to experience a juxtaposition of ‘familiarity’ and ‘strangeness,’ leading them to question their own identity and eventually explore their sense of self.

While Park's personal identity may not be explicitly depicted in her works, the unconscious emotions related to 'strange environments' and the perspectives she encountered as an 'outsider' are interwoven and expressed on her canvases. Rather than objective depictions, her works create surreal and enigmatic scenes. Dream-like images and ambiguous symbols frequently appear, exemplified in pieces like <From Sunset to Dawn> and <Faces in the Water>. The vivid and dark colors, along with the jungle-like imagery, evoke places one might see in dreams. These surreal and exotic landscapes can induce a sense of anxiety or confusion, directly confronting the viewer with the artist's contemplation of identity within her nomadic journey.

In today's world, we live as 'nomadists,' experiencing physical or mental wandering and seeking answers to our own identities in the process. Shin-Young Park, as a contemporary individual, shares this wandering journey with us. Through her works, we can glimpse the results of her introspective struggles. By engaging with her art, viewers are encouraged to confront their own paths in life seriously, contemplating where to step next and initiating a journey of self-discovery.
