“드미드미바나나는 다이애나, 데미 무엇, 데미트리 총 3인으로 구성, 2020년 결성된 밴드이다. 80년대 이미지와 사운드를 뿌리로 삼아 성장한 그들은 자신들만의 음악을 계속한다. 그러던 중 팀의 7번째 싱글 <Mon Blanc>가 틱톡 등의 플랫폼을 통해 전 세계적으로 화제가 되었으며 첫 정규 앨범인 <Delta Integral>을 발표한다. 본 전시에서는 해당 앨범의 <Driving With you>의 뮤직비디오를 비롯한 드미드미바나나의 작품들을 전시한다.”
위 내용은 이번 전시에 작가로 참여한 밴드 드미드미바나나에 대한 설명이다. 그리고 상술했던 모든 내용은 허구이다. 사실 ‘드미드미바나나’는 의도적으로 창조된 가상의 밴드이다. 그리고 ‘드미드미바나나’의 이름으로 노래를 만들고, 뮤직비디오를 촬영했으며, 댄스챌린지 등을 만들었다. 가상의 이미지지만 ‘허구’는 아닌, 그야말로 ‘가짜 사건 ¹ ’인 것이다. 다시 말해 이번 전시에 선보이는 <Driving With You M/V>와 <DDBe>는 어떤 아티스트의 음원 및 이벤트 인 것 같지만 그들의 실상은 진짜가 아닌 가짜 아티스트이며, 음원과 챌린지 영상 등도 존재하나 사실이 아니다.
‘믿고 싶은 것을 믿는다.’라는 개념의 ‘탈진실(Post-truth)’시대에 대한 고찰로부터 시작된 이 프로젝트는, 디지털 기술의 발달로 물리적 공간의 연결성이 옅어진 이 시대에 오프라인으로 존재하지 않고 온라인으로 존재하는 새로운 개념의 밴드를 만들어내는 결과로 수렴된다. 그들은 지금까지의 밴드들처럼 공연장에서 공연하는 것이 아닌, 인스타그램이나 유튜브 같은 SNS 공간상에서만 활동한다. 드미드미바나나의 인스타그램 계정에는 수십개의 게시물에 ‘좋아요’들이 달려 있으며, 유투브에서는 그들의 <Driving With You MV> 영상을 찾을 수 있다. 해당 유투브 영상에 달린 댓글 중에는 ‘요즘 바쁜 일이 많았는데 들으면서 힐링했습니다.’ 라는 코멘트가 존재한다. 이 누군지 모를 이용자는 자신이 인터넷 세상에서 발견한 아티스트와 음악을 진짜로 받아들이고, 감상하며 새로운 정보로 인식하는 것이다. 결론적으로, ‘존재하나 진실이 아닌’ 드미드미바나나는, 실제의 존재에서 비롯됐으나 진실이 아닌 채로 소비되는 콘텐츠로의 현실을 비판하고자 하는 하나의 실험이다².
과연 드미드미바나나의 실험을 통해 비판하고자 하는 지점이 현실과 동떨어져 있는 것일까? 2022년 넷플릭스에서 공개된 <애나 만들기>라는 작품이 있다. 해당 드라마는 2018년 미국에서 체포된 애나 소로킨의 실화를 다루고 있으며, 소로킨은 독일계 재벌 상속녀라는 가짜 신분과 이미지를 통해 뉴욕의 상류층들에게 사기행각을 벌였다. 외국의 사례만이 아니다. 지난 2023년 한국에서도 사실은 여성이었으나 남성이라고 사기행각을 벌여 유명인과 결혼을 하려고 했던 사건이 있었다. 이처럼 거짓된 이미지로 대중을 속였던 실제 사례가 존재하듯, 사람들은 현실을 덮어버리는 이미지를 소비하며(그것이 진실이든 진실이 아니든) 그 과정에서 해당 이미지를 실제라고 믿게 되어 버린다. 점차 새로운 정보를 받아들일 때 가장 중요한, 대상에 대한 진실성 탐구는 소홀해지게 되었다.
더 이상 물리적 거리에 구애받지 않고 디지털로 연결되어 개인간의 연결이 더욱 편리해진 이 시대는, 수많은 정보들이 허구와 진실을 넘나들며 존재하고 있다. 그래서 그 중 어떤 정보들은 ‘실제(實際)’가 아니지만 ‘실재(實在)’한다고 여겨진다. 작가는 이 프로젝트를 통해 ‘존재하나 존재하지 않는 것’을 제시하며, 틱톡과 인스타그램, 유튜브 등 SNS상 디지털 미디어들에 눈이 멀어버린 우리에게 질문을 던진다.

Unlike traditional bands that perform in venues, DemiDemi Banana operates solely on social media platforms like Instagram and YouTube. The Instagram account of DemiDemi Banana has numerous posts with 'likes,' and on YouTube, you can find their "Driving With You MV" video. Among the comments on this YouTube video, one user wrote, "I've been busy lately, but this song healed me." This unknown user perceives and appreciates the artist and music they discovered online as real and accepts it as new information. In conclusion, DemiDemi Banana, which 'exists but is not real,' is an experiment aimed at critiquing the reality of content consumed despite its lack of authenticity. Is the critique point of DemiDemi Banana's experiment far removed from reality?
There is a show on Netflix released in 2022 called "Inventing Anna." This drama is based on the true story of Anna Sorokin, who was arrested in the United States in 2018. Sorokin committed fraud against New York's elite by pretending to be a German heiress. This is not just a foreign case. In 2023, a case in Korea revealed that a woman, pretending to be a man, tried to marry a celebrity through fraud. Just as there are real cases of deceiving the public with false images, people consume these images, believing them to be true, whether they are or not. In the process, the crucial task of verifying the truthfulness of new information has become neglected.
In this era, where digital connections have made interpersonal interactions more convenient without the constraints of physical distance, a vast amount of information exists, blurring the lines between fiction and truth. Therefore, some information is perceived to 'exist' despite not being 'real.' Through this project, the artist presents 'things that exist but do not exist' and asks us, who are blinded by digital media such as TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube:
"Is what you see and hear, what you believe to be 'truth,' really the 'truth'? Can we judge that?"
