어둠이 내려앉은 사막, 동서남북은 의미를 잃고 눈앞엔 끝없는 모랫바닥만이 펼쳐져 있다. 이곳에서 우리는 오로지 하늘에 놓인 별에 의지한다. 이때 별은 하나의 길잡이일 뿐 목적지를 비춰주지 않는다. 그럼에도 우리가 별을 따라 걷는 것은 어쩌면 끝나지 않을 여정 속에서 뜻하지 않은 여로(旅路)와 마주할 그 순간을 고대하기 때문이다.
프랑스의 사회학자 미셸 마페졸리(Michel Maffesoli, 1944~)에 따르면 인간은 무작정 다른 곳으로 떠나고자 하는 ‘방랑’의 욕구를 본성으로 가진다. 하지만 근대에 들어서며 ‘정착’이 인간 삶의 근간이 되는 절대적인 가치로 존재함에 따라 이 욕구는 억눌리게 되었다. 자기에게 주어진 것에 정착하기를 요구하는 정주(定住) 사회에서 유목민은 그저 사회의 경계를 벗어난 반역자이자, 탈선자일 뿐이다. 그러나 기술의 발전으로 확보된 ‘이동성’은 방랑에 대해 억압된 본성을 불러내었고, 점차 가속화되는 현대인의 유목화는 비선형적으로 부유하는 이들의 영원한 정착을 없앤다.
노마디즘은 중심이 없어져 어떠한 것도 보장되지 않는, 불안정한 사회의 새로운 인식 틀이자 패러다임이다. 동시에 정주 사회에서 유목 사회로 급변하는 사회구조와 새로운 환경에 적응하기 위해 우리가 택한 생존방식이기도 하다. 세계의 불안정으로부터 예술의 동력을 얻어낸 노마드 예술가는 기호와 형식을 탐험하며 자신의 정체성을 끊임없이 생성하고 변화시킨다. 미술 작품 역시 더 이상 완결된 물체가 아니라 연속된 한순간으로, 한 궤적에 놓인 다양한 에피소드들을 연결하는 ‘봉합 지점’이 된다.
별을 따라 움직이는 유목민은 자신만의 길을 만들며 걸어간다. 각자 다른 목적지를 향해 걸어가는 이들은 점(點)에 머물기도, 때로는 선(線)상에서 이동하기도 하며 무한한 가능성에 스스로를 내맡긴다. 규칙적이면서도 변덕스러운 발걸음 하나하나는 삶을 향한 적극적이고 주체적인 탐험에 대한 열정이 서려 있다. 본 전시는 모래와 별 사이를 계속해서 유랑하는 노마드 예술가의 여정으로 초대하여 그 아래에서 함께 걸어보기를 제안한다.
In the darkness of the desert, where directions lose their meaning, vast stretches of barren land unfold endlessly in all directions. Here, we solely rely on the stars that adorn the sky above us. Yet, these stars serve merely as guides, not illuminating our destination. Still, we follow them, perhaps yearning for the moment when an unexpected 'traveler's path' awaits us along the never-ending journey.
According to the French sociologist Michel Maffesoli (1944~), humans possess an innate desire for "Wandering," to venture aimlessly into the unknown. However, with the modern ideal of "settling down" considered as an absolute value in human life, this desire has been suppressed. In a sedentary society that demands adherence to what one is given, nomads are seen merely as rebels or deviants who defy societal norms. Yet, advancements in technology have revived the suppressed instinct for wandering, and the accelerating nomadism of modern individuals is erasing the notion of eternal settlement.
Nomadism becomes a new framework and paradigm in a society devoid of a center, where nothing is guaranteed, and instability prevails. It is also a survival strategy to adapt to the rapidly changing social structures and environments transitioning from settled societies to nomadic ones. Nomadic artists, fueled by the world's instability, constantly explore symbols and forms, ceaselessly creating and transforming their identities. Artworks no longer stand as finished objects but as stitching points that connect various episodes within a continuous moment.
Nomads, following the stars, forge their paths as they walk. Each individual, heading towards different destinations, sometimes pauses at points, sometimes moves along lines, entrusting themselves to infinite possibilities. Each regular or capricious step reflects a passion for active and subjective exploration of life. This exhibition invites you to join the journey of nomadic artists who continue to wander between the sands and the stars, proposing to walk together beneath them.
